Edmond Halley is the first to report the phenomenon later known as Baily’s Beads; also notes bright red prominences and the east-west asymmetry in the corona, which he attributes to an atmosphere on the Moon or Sun.

1779 – Death of John Winthrop, Physicist, Astronomer, Educator who was a foremost scientist in early America. He observed the transits of Mercury in 1740 and 1761 and journeyed to Newfoundland to observe a transit of Venus in 1761.
