1997 – Images from around the world of Comet Hale-Bopp are posted online. The image to the right is one is taken by David Renneke at 9:32 pm CDT at a rural Milan, Italy site using a Meade 8″ telescope and an SBIG ST-6 CCD camera.
1985 – The discovery of the ozone hole was announced in a paper published in the scientific journal Nature. This publication by scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (Joe Farman, Brian Gardiner, and Jonathan Shanklin) reported the substantial thinning of the ozone layer over Antarctica. The concern for human health led to the Montreal Protocol.

1925 – Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, born in Nashville, Tennesee, USA. She is known as the mother of the Hubble Space Telescope and the first female executive at NASA as the chief of astronomy. The Roman Space Telescope (RST) is scheduled to launch in May 2027 is named after her. (d. 25 December 2018)
