1937 – Valentina Tereshkova first woman to travel into space, aboard the Vostok 6. She was the only woman to fly in space solo. She completed 48 orbits in 71 hours.
1927 – Leroy Gordon Jr ‘Gordo’ Cooper – American test pilot astronaut and the first to spend over a day in space. He flew 2 spaceflights for 9.4 days in space. Flew to orbit on Mercury 9, last of the Mercury missions in 1963 and Gemini 5, an endurance test in 1965.



1787 – Joseph Fraunhofer pioneer German spectroscopist, namesake of the prominent absorption lines in the sun’s spectrum. Like many glassmakers, he was subject to heavy metal vapors resulting in his early death at the age of 39. His most valuable glassmaking recipes are thought to have gone to the grave with him.(d. 7 June 1826)
