1978 – Czech Vladimír Remek becomes the first non-Russian or non-American to go into space, when he is launched aboard Soyuz 28 with A.A. Gubarev to dock with Salyut 6 to carry out scientific research and experiments jointly developed by Soviet a nd Czechoslovak specialists
1972 – Pioneer 10 (USA) launched on an Atlas/Centaur rocket from Cape Canaveral. It become the first probe fly through the asteroid belt and on to the planet Jupiter (in 1973). Pioneer 10 carries a plaque designed to identify its origin should the probe be encountered as it drifts through the Milky Way galaxy. Pioneer 10 is still returning data as of March 1999, and is 10.81 billion kilometers (6.716 billion miles) from Earth. 27 years after the launch the real-time tracks of Pioneer 10 are being used to train spacecraft controllers in tracking station protocol and data archiving procedures.
