1989 – STS-29 Discovery finally launched from KSC after multiple delays since the original launch date of February 18. The primary payload was TDRS-D, the third and final component of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) constellation in geosynchronous orbit.



1986 – Soyuz T-15 launch to dock first with Mir then moved to dock with the inoperative space station Salyut 7, found frozen. Repairs were made, but the station never hosted humans again. On July 16 1986 Salyut 7 made an uncontrolled entry over Argentina.
1970 –Wernher von Braun becomes NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning
1969 – Apollo program: Apollo 9 returns safely to Earth after testing the Lunar Module.

1781 – William Herschel discovers the planet Uranus.

1970 – Aleksandr Mikhailovich Samokutyayev a Russian pilot and cosmonaut who spent 331.5 days in space. Flew to orbit on Soyuz TMA-21 in 2011 and Soyuz TMA-14M in 2014.


1855 – Percival Lowell birthday, a wealthy Bostonian who established his own observatory outside Flagstaff, Arizona. Lowell predicted canals on Mars. (d. 12 November 1916)
