1999 – Lunar Prospector Impact. At 2:52 am PDT, the spacecraft plunged into a permanently shadowed crater near the Moon’s south pole. This final act of the spacecraft may help determine if water-ice actually exists on the Moon. The crash ending to the successful mission also deposited 1 ounce of the remains of space scientist Eugene Shoemaker on the lunar surface, in effect making Shoemaker the first person to be buried on the moon.


1992 – STS-46 Launched aboard Atlantis. EURECA European scientific and technology missions, satellite deployment, and Tethered Satellite System, TSS-1 operation, Technology research.

1971 – Apollo 15 conducted the first “deep space” EVA. As of 2025, it remains one of only three such EVAs, all performed during Apollo’s missions. Later that day, the crew set a record for the longest Apollo flight to that point.
