
2005 – After a two-and-a-half-year wait since the Columbia disaster, STS 114, The Return to Flight , launched at 14:39:00 UTC. However, due to debris falling at launch, but not hitting the spacecraft, on July 27 NASA grounded the fleet pending further investigations. The shuttle did not fly again until STS-121 on July 4 2006.

1904 – Frank Scott Hogg was a Canadian astronomer born in Preston, Ontario. Hogg received the second doctorate in astronomy awarded at Harvard University in 1929 where he pioneered in the study of spectrophotometry of stars and of spectra of comets. His supervisor there was Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin.He was the head of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Toronto and director of the David Dunlap Observatory from 1946 until his death from heart attack. The crater Hogg on the moon is co-named for him and Arthur Robert Hogg. (d. January 1, 1951)
