2011 – STS 135 Atlantis, the last STS flight lands at Kennedy Space Center. The shuttle program is done.


1973 – Mars 4 (USSR) Arrived at Mars in February of 1974. However the orbiter failed to go into orbit. It did return some data and some images.
1969 – Luna 15 (USSR) an attempt to deploy a rover and a possible soil sample return crashes while attempting to land on the Moon.

1961 – Mercury 4 Launch. Crew: Gus Grissom. This was the second flight of the US manned suborbital missions. Duration: 15 min, 37 seconds.

1620 – Jean Picard – born in La Flèche, where he studied at the Jesuit Collège Royal Henry-Le-Grand. Picard is known for his accurate measure of the size of the Earth, based on a survey of one degree of latitude along the Paris Meridian. (d. 12 July 1682)
