2006 – Voyager 1, the most distant human-made object in the cosmos, reaches 100 astronomical units from the sun at 5:13 p.m. ET. That means the spacecraft, which launched on August 20, 1977, was 100 times more distant from the sun than Earth is. Or, in familiar terms, Voyager 1 was about 15 billion kilometres (9.3 billion miles) from the sun.
In 2025, Voyager 1 is currently located in the constellation Ophiuchus, over 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometres) from Earth. It has travelled beyond the heliosphere, the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the sun, and is now in interstellar space. It takes about 22 hours and 35 minutes for a radio signal to travel from Earth to Voyager 1. Where are Voyager 1 and 2 now?
