1996- Launch of STS 79, Atlantis on  the 4th mission to dock with the Mir Space Station. Highlights of the mission included the pickup and return to Earth of Shannon Lucid who had set a new U.S. record for long duration spaceflight.

1992 - D. Jewitt, University of Hawaii; and J. Luu, University of California at Berkeley report the discovery of the first object orbiting the Sun beyond the planet Pluto, in the Kuiper Belt.
