Do most comets end their lives this way?

August 5

2011 - Juno, the first solar powered deeper space explorer, is launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 12:25 p.m. EDT. Arrival at Jupiter is scheduled for July 2016. - Infographic

2000 - Comet Linear 1999/S4 breakup imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope. This image gives astronomers a close-up look at what may be the smallest building blocks of cometary nuclei.

1973 - Mars 6 (USSR) launched. On March 12, 1974 Mars 6 soft-landed  on Mars at 24* S, 25* W. It returned atmospheric data during descent.

1969 - Mariner 7 (USA) Mars Flyby. Closest approach 3518 km, returned 125 images.

1930 - Neil Armstrong (1930-2012), first human to walk on the moon, is born.

1864 - Giovanni Donati makes the first spectroscopic observations of a comet (Tempel, 1864 II) and sees what are now known as the Swan bands (3 of `em) due to molecular carbon (C2).

It is my conclusion that human evolution and the motions of matter in space are intrinsically linked. The observation and understanding of the complexity of biological history on Earth cannot be complete without the tandem observation and understanding of a dynamic greater cosmos. - SpaceGene
