July 31

1999 - Lunar Prospector Impact. At 2:52 am PDT, the spacecraft plunged into a permanently shadowed crater near the Moon's south pole. This final act of the spacecraft may help determine if water-ice actually exists on the Moon. The crash ending to the successful mission also deposited 1 ounce of the remains of space scientist Eugene Shoemaker on the lunar surface, in effect making Shoemaker the first person to be buried on the moon.

1969 - Mariner 6 Mars Flyby. Closest approach 3330 km. It returns high resolution images of the Martian surface, concentrating on the equatorial region.

1964 - U.S. Ranger 7 relays the first close range photographs of the moon.

It is my conclusion that human evolution and the motions of matter in space are intrinsically linked. The observation and understanding of the complexity of biological history on Earth cannot be complete without the tandem observation and understanding of a dynamic greater cosmos. - SpaceGene
